Despite worr
ying about ticket sales, organ refurbishment, wedding open days and rival productions such as Last Night at the Proms, Tempus Brass gave
us an unforgettable evening. The group's light-hearted banter gave a wonderfully relaxed feel, which was much appreciated by the audience. Different members of the quintet introduced each piece of music. We were not only able to put the music in context but were given a little insight into the personalities and musical achievements of the group. It is quite overwhelming to realise that we have such talented men playing with the Liverpool Philharmonic and other reputable orchestras one day and at our church the next.
The programme offered was a varied one and enjoyed by all. A particular highlight for me was the Toccata and Fugue, which I have only ever heard played previously on an organ. It was spectacular. I cannot imagine how anyone's fingers can move at such speed while playing a brass instrument (or any other instrument for that matter). We had an eclectic mix of music – some pieces arranged by the quintet themselves - there was indeed something for everyone.
They finished with a couple of light-hearted pieces where they not only played jazz but also gave us a demonstration of how to avoid tarantulas! (Those who were lucky enough to be there know what I mean).
It was a superb evening. We had an appreciative audience, the church looked beautiful by candlelight and the music was played by an incredible group of talented and funny men, “the best concert yet” I was told by one of the audience. We enjoyed Tempus Brass and from their comments I think they enjoyed playing at St. George's church. Many thanks to everyone who helped in all the various ways, which made the evening such a success.
